Correct Pick Technique Tutorial
How to hold “Your Pick Of Destiny” correctly...
This is one of the most fundamentally important
things you can learn and will enable you to play
quickly and accurately, while achieving a great tone
from any guitar you play.
Hold your plectrum between the side of the first
finger and thumb with the tip pointing out from the
bottom side of the thumb, with the tip of the pick
level with beginning or cuticle of the thumb nail.
This allows for easy pinched harmonics and also
thumb muting with the part of the thumb left free up
from where the pick is held.
The tip of the pick should protrude no more than a
2mm from the side of the thumb. Keep your other
fingers in a relaxed curled in position.
Hold the pick against the string at a 20-30 degree
angle so the front is facing you and rear is
pointing towards the bridge and volume & tone
controls. This produces much more rich and character
full tone than flat picking.
Also varying the angle of the pick has a subtle but
very effective dynamic on the sound produced try
experimenting with this to find the tone you desire.
Holding the pick at this angle also prevents over
picking which is all too evident if the string is
going sharp sounding from harsh plucking or pulling
the pick out from under the string which makes it
snap back against the frets.
The pick should always feel as though it is just
brushing through the strings. This enables the use
of heavier plectrums which in turn give a much
beefier sound.
Try picking as close to the end of the finger board
as is comfortable as this produces an exceptionally
warm tone from any guitar.
