Check
out the Five MP3 samples of this stunning debut.
1)
4 am and I can’t Sleep (until I hear the music)
Written by accident in a lesson whilst tuning
someone’s guitar - it’s funny how chords fall out
over themselves. Insomnia results in a man going
down the garden, in his boxers, with two microphones
to record the birds. What follows is a day in the
life piece, ending with an enigmatic sound effect of
the bikes…revving.
2)
Bald on the Inside
Sometimes humour is best left unexplained…this is
all a rush in one way or another…written on a blue
squire strat (or was it someone’s girlfriend), a
blaze of inspiration enhanced with some base riffs,
it all begins with a triangle solo…’nuff said.
3) He’s got a Wig on
Around for a while, inspired by Miles, in a kinda’
blues/ jazz way but sounding nothing like it!.
4) Friends in the Sky
Went downstairs one morning and this track fell out
of the guitar, before breakfast. It’s about losing
people close to you, and people you know.
5) Palm House
The track stems from a concept of doing the cover
photography in the palm house at Kew gardens. It
just became a great day out, and the music describes
the transition between different areas and
environments.
6) Exercises for Anoraks
Instrumental music isn’t just a practice. A lot of
people say ‘you can use it to enhance your bending/
tremolo/ legato/ tapping technique’ - just stop
there. It doesn’t have to have words and it doesn’t
have to be an exercise for anoraks!
7)
New moon on Monday
A nice, upbeat, major-scale tune… (like running on
the spot).
8)
Cactus Garden
Originally going to be called ‘Basra’- but obviously
this has significant connotations, which still
linger on.
9)
Lala Ping Fork
A sweet little Latin number, the name is a mish-mash
of unrelated objects. Imagine walking out of a tent
and breathing in the sky, then spilling a
French-man’s champagne and really getting up their
nose (en Francais).
10) Steel ¥
Funky bass, double tracked egg-harp, heart beat
recorded with gain up so high you can hear the
fridge buzzin’... all combine to make this a very
personal track.
11) The Fair
A track at the centre of it all. Written in
desperation, an expression of a dark frame of mind,
this was a catalyst for the recordings that
followed. The track is universally accessible, with
the slightly distorted chromatic progressions of the
fair ground recalling the mystery, fear, and
excitement of the unknown.
